３コマ漫画で英語をスラスラと話せるようになろう！
今回のお題は『ハワイ行きの飛行機に乗ったカップル』のお話です。ハワイ行きの飛行機に乗ったカップルが現地到着後、荷物が届かずにその後数日間同じ服で過ごす羽目に... というシチュエーション。あなたなら英語でどう説明しますか？
３コマ漫画のストーリーを英語で伝える３ステップ
Step1. 過去形で答えてみよう
Step2. 2コマ目を現在形として答えてみよう
Step3. 仮定の話で答えてみよう
早速、上記の３つのシチュエーションで英文を考える練習をしてみてください。自然に英語が口から出てくるようになる。日常英会話が無意識のうちにスラスラと話せるようになる。そんなスピーキング能力を手に入れたいあなたは、ぜひトライしてみてくださいね。
Step1. 過去形で答えてみよう
まずは３コマ漫画のストーリーを過去形で話してみましょう。日常会話の半分以上は過去に起こった出来事を話していると言われるほど、過去形でストーリーを伝えることは重要な要素です。それでは下記の３コマ漫画に登場する『ハワイ行きの飛行機に乗ったカップル』に何が起こったかを英語で説明してみてください。
①: 英語で確認しましょう。(以下解答例)The couple boarded the plane to Hawaii. But, at the Hawaii airport, they were told their luggage was still in Japan and wouldn't be delivered soon. Unfortunately, they ended up spending the next few days wearing the same clothes until their luggage arrived.
②: 日本語で確認しましょう。カップルがハワイ行きの飛行機に乗ったが、到着した時に荷物がまだ日本にあり届かなかった。残念なことにそこから2日間、荷物が届くまでの間同じ服で過ごす羽目になった。
③:Words&Phrasesを例文で確認しましょう。couple: 「恋人、カップル」を意味します。
<例文> "The couple went on a romantic vacation."（カップルはロマンチックな休暇に行った。）
boarded the plane: 飛行機に乗ったことを表すフレーズです。"boarded"は過去形。
<例文> Eric and Mika boarded the plane bound for Paris. (エリックとミカはパリ行きの飛行機に乗った。)
They were told: 彼らは(他の誰かから)言われたことを表現する受け身のフレーズです。”were”はbe動詞の過去形, “toldはtellの過去分詞形”
<例文> They were told not to enter the building. (彼らはその建物に入らないように言われた。)
unfortunately: 「残念なことに」という意味の副詞です。
<例文> "Unfortunately, it rained during our picnic."（残念なことに、ピクニック中に雨が降りました。）
end up: 最終的にある場所や状態に到達することを指します。また、特定の結果や状況になることも示します。”ended”はendの過去形
<例文> I ended up staying home.(最終的に私は家にとどまることになった。)
We ended up going to the beach. (結局、私たちはビーチに行くことになった。)
spend: 「過ごす」という動詞で、過去形は「spent」です。
<例文> We spent the entire day exploring the city.（私たちは1日中街を探検した。）
arrive: 「到着する」という動詞で過去形は"arrived"です。
<例文> We are arriving at London station in 5 minutes. (あと5分でロンドン駅に到着します。)
⑤:穴あき英文で練習しましょう。The couple （A.） the plane to Hawaii. But at the Hawaii airport, they （B.） their luggage was still in Japan and won't be delivered soon. （C. ）, they（D.）spending the next few days wearing the same clothes until their luggage （E.）.
回答* A: boarded, B: were told, C: Unfortunately, D: ended up, E: arrived
Step2. 2コマ目を現在形として答えてみよう
さてステップ２は、真ん中の２コマ目を現在形としてストーリーを英語で話してみましょう。１コマ目、３コマ目はそれぞれ、過去形、未来形の表現に変換して、ステップ１の英文をどのように変更したらいいか考えてみてください。
①: 英語で確認しましょう。（以下解答例）The couple boarded a plane to Hawaii. They have just arrived at the Hawaii airport, but they've been told that their luggage is still in Japan and won't be delivered soon. Unfortunately, they'll have to spend the next few days in the same clothes until their luggage arrives.
②日本語で確認しましょう。カップルがハワイ行きの飛行機に乗った。彼らは今ハワイ空港に到着したところだが、なんと荷物がまだ日本にあって届かないと言れている。残念なことに彼らは、そこから2日間荷物が届くまでの間、同じ服で過ごす羽目になるだろう。
③:Words&Phrasesを確認しましょう。They have just arrived: 今ちょうど到着したという意味の現在完了形です。have + 過去分詞で現在までに完了していることや現在までの経験などを話すことができます。
<例文> “I have finished my homework.”(私は宿題が終わりました。)
“We have been to Japan 3 times.”(日本には3回行ったことがあります。)
won’t be delivered soon: すぐには届かないだろうという意味の確率80％程度の推測を表す表現です。won’t はwill notの短縮形、delivered はdeliver「配達する」の過去分詞形
<例文> “It won’t be so cold tomorrow.”(明日はそんなに寒くならないだろう。)
They will have to spend: 彼らは(これから先の未来)過ごさなければならないという意味のフレーズです。”will” は未来意志を表す助動詞、”have to +動詞の原型”で「〜しなければならない」という意味を表現できます。
<例文> “I will have to spend another few hours here.”(もう2,3時間ここで過ごさないといけない。)
⑤: 穴あき英文で練習しましょう。The couple boarded a plane to Hawaii. They （A. ） just （arrived） at the Hawaii airport, but they've been (C.) that their luggage is still in Japan and (D. ) be delivered soon. Unfortunately, they'll (E. ) spend the next few days in the same clothes until their luggage (F. ).
回答* A: have, B: arrived, C: told, D: won’t, E: have to, F: arrives
Step3. 仮定の話で答えてみよう
最後のステップ3はチャレンジ問題です。「もし〜なら」といったタラレバ話は日常会話の中でも頻繁に使われる会話パターンです。ぜひチャレンジしてスラスラを話せるようになりましょう。
①:英語で確認しましょう。（以下回答例）If the couple boards a plane to Hawaii and arrives at the Hawaii airport and is told that their luggage is still in Japan and won't be delivered soon, they would have to spend the next few days in the same clothes until their luggage arrives.
②日本語で確認しましょう。カップルがハワイ行きの飛行機に乗り、ハワイの空港に到着して、荷物がまだ日本にあるのですぐには届かないと言われたら、荷物が到着するまでの数日間は同じ服で過ごさなければならないだろう。
③:Words&Phrasesを確認しましょう。If 文章A, 文章Bで「もしAならばB」という仮定や条件を表す表現になります。上記文章を分解してみると、 If [the couple boards a plane to Hawaii](文章A) and [(the couple) arrives at the Hawaii airport] (文章B) and [ (the couple) is told that their luggage is still in Japan and won't be delivered soon](文章C), they would have to spend the next few days in the same clothes until their luggage arrives(文章D). となり、「もしAでBでCならば、Dになるだろう」とIf 文章A, 文章Bの形を応用していることがわかります。
<例文>
"If it is rainy tomorrow, the game will be canceled".（もし明日雨ならば、その試合は中止になるだろう。）
"If you pass the exam, I will buy you dinner".（もしあなたが試験に合格したら、夕食をご馳走するよ。）
⑤: 穴あき英文で練習しましょう。If the couple (A. ) a plane to Hawaii and (B. ) at the Hawaii airport and (C. ) that their luggage is still in Japan and won't be delivered soon, they (D. ) have to spend the next few days in the same clothes until their luggage (E. ).
回答* A: boards, B: arrives, C: is told, D: would, E: arrives
